From Evo Devo Universe
Jump to: navigation, search

If you are a published scholar, you are most welcome to join our free, nonprofit, grant-funded research community considering and critiquing potential evolutionary and developmental process in the the universe and its subsystems. Our "Evo-Devo Universe" (EDU) complex systems research community presently numbers nearly 120 international scholars. We require the numerical majority of the community to be formally affiliated with academic institutions, but we also allow independent scholars who have published on EDU-related themes.

Our members:

  • are informed about our regular online Scholars Talks and Book Club, and our future Workshops and Conferences.
  • may be listed on our People page, if they have an institutional affiliation, or notable peer-reviewed publications as independent scholars.
  • have access to a free, private Scholars Bibliography with PDF papers on EDU related topics.
  • may edit and add to this EDU website, list references to their work in the Bibliography, create new Research Themes and Research Questions.
  • may discuss and (respectfully) debate challenging issues in a variety of topics and themes, on our filtered EDU-Talk listserve, at a high academic level.
  • may offer feedback on other member's draft publications, and collaborate. We encourage co-publication with other community members.
  • may found and direct an EDU-related Research Group, run workshops, and seek grant funding through our nonprofit, with Director approval.

To join the listserve, requires only a few minutes to fill-in the following details, and email them to Clément Vidal.

  1. Name (and any nickname you prefer):
  2. Email (to be used on Google Groups if you join EDU-Talk):
  3. City and Country of residence:
  4. Website(s), if any (any social profile, personal or professional pages you may wish to share):
  5. Background, education, experience, or affiliations relevant to EDU Themes or Questions (1 paragraph or more):
  6. Research Interests with respect to EDU Themes or Questions (1 paragraph or more):
  7. Publications related to EDU Themes or Questions. Two publications are required to join the listserve (online self-published essays, other-published articles, preprints, or peer-reviewed academic papers), as our community exists to stimulate our members publication and feedback. If you have not yet published anything publicly, we encourage you to do so and to reapply. Please provide open access links, or PDFs if not open access. Feel free to list as many publications as you wish, to help others to get to know your work.

Optional:

  1. What are your 10 favorite books/papers? (Can you also provide a sentence describing what you like about each?).
  2. We would love to list you on our People page. Please provide one short sentence describing your research and your institutional affiliation(s).
  3. Do you have any feedback (confidential or public) to improve any wording on our wiki, or advice for serving our community's Mission?

If you join EDU-Talk, the answers you provide in Questions 1-7 will be posted to the list by the moderator as your New Member Introduction.

Thank you for your patience in allowing a few days for your submission to be processed. If accepted, you will receive a "Welcome message" to the Google Group listserve, with instructions on member options. If not accepted, you will be informed by a list moderator. There are minimal scholarship and research relevancy requirements for list members.

List traffic is variable. Scholars should note that you can adjust your email settings to receive Individual Emails, a single Daily Digest, or Web-Only (no inbox email). In Gmail, you can also route Google Group emails to your Forums folder, to minimize Inbox traffic. Scholars should also note that there is a deep archive of past discussions (since 2008) that can be searched for interesting topics using the Google Groups search function.

We are particularly seeking cosmologists, physicists, biologists, cognitive and social scientists, computer scientists and technology scholars, philosophers, systems theorists, complexity theorists, and other scholars interested in exploring and critiquing models, hypotheses, and questions relating to the extent and interaction of evolutionary (or quasi-evolutionary) and developmental (or quasi-developmental) processes in the universe and its subsystems, over many levels, scales, and domains.

We sincerely hope you can join our community and contribute your small part to better understanding the evolutionary development of our universe!

A Brief Note On Scope: Such topics as non-naturalistic teleology, intelligent design, supernaturalism, theology, the evolution of religious belief, and science and spirituality convergence are outside the scope of our community. Hypotheses of directionality (systemic trajectory), orthogenesis (systemic improvement) and teleology (systemic purpose, implicit to system structure or function) may be discussed, but only from a naturalistic or developmental perspective, with the aim to find quantifiable, testable, and falsifiable models or hypotheses. Challenging topics in informational and computational complexity (intelligence, mind, consciousness, morality, culture) are welcomed, but should strive to show relation to known or proposed structure and process in natural systems (physical, chemical, biological, cultural, technological), and to explore measurable, empirical, and testable implications of the precepts. Please see Themes and Questions for any other questions about the scope of the EDU community, and EDU Talk introduction and posting rules for general questions on posting to and moderation of the listserve.
