Welcome to the Self-Organization Page of EDU 2008!

Car-Sharing and Room-Sharing

A Car- and Room-Sharing Page is available for presenters and attendees who wish to post carshare or roomshare offers or requests to economize lodging and travel at EDU 2008.

Detailed Conference Program

EDU 2008 is in the Dussane Room, Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris, 45 Rue d'Ulm, 75005 (Île-De-France), Paris, France. Continental breakfast, lunch, and coffee breaks will be provided to attendees on both days. EDU 2008 is an academic event, closed to press. Journalists are welcome to attend, but no writeups please.

Below is the current program for EDU 2008. Presenters, please email us if you would like any changes. With a very few exceptions, presenters will get 20 minutes to present, followed by 10 minutes of Q&A (28-30 minutes total). There will be a separate Panel Q&A for three groups of presenters every day as well.

The papers below are available for download in the Files section of EDU-Talk. If you are a scholar interested in these issues, and/or will be a presenter or attendee at EDU 2008, please complete the very brief seven question EDU-Talk Subscription Form to join EDU-Talk and download presenter's papers.

In a spirit of self-organization, each presenter is kindly requested to moderate the talk of the following speaker. Concretely, he is thus responsible for:

  • presenting the speaker (ask for an Introduction Card, and prepare one for your talk)
  • managing the 10 minutes of questions from the audience.
  • making sure the speaker respects the timing (we will provide time reminder cards)

10th October (optional tourism day)

Some of us will be engaging in tours of Paris on this day. A Balabus tour (click Balabus graphic to see the route) will be organized, with accompaniment by a local guide we will have the entire day.

Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

In this section you can propose activities and topics for Special Interest Groups (SIGs) to discuss, critique, and potentially collaborate around any topic related to community Themes or Questions. SIG topics are often, but not necessarily, linked to conference presentations. See the list of Ten Primary EDU SIGS we would particularly like to see emerge at EDU conferences. Any EDU presenter or attendee should please feel free to volunteer to run a SIG, with listed topic subject to conference organizer approval. Please also feel free to run multiple SIG's of the same letter-type, each on somewhat different topics. Also feel free to run a SIG that does not fit the one-letter codes. We prioritize meeting time for Primary SIGs, but will try to accomodate as many SIGs as possible. Also let us know (in parentheses) if you'd like the SIG to meet on one or both days. We may be able to accomodate some proposed two day SIGs, depending on demand.

SIG leaders should try to have some followup or collaboration with SIG attendees after the conference. Consider running your SIG at multiple EDU conferences to build continuity. You may wish to set up an EDU discussion group around your SIG. Finally it would be great if you could post a brief public wiki page of issues discussed in your SIG, and link to it from the SIGs Page of the EDU wiki, to promote future collaboration.

Open Space Presentations or Discussions

There are Open Space time slots Wed and Thurs evening (parallel sessions each evening) for which you may propose additional presentations and Q&A or open discussion on any topic of interest. Most Open Space slots go to attendees, rather than presenters, to allow them time to present on or discuss topics of interest, but some of the slots are also made available to presenters. Open Space is less formal than SIGs. There is no expectation of continuation or followup after the conference, but topics are still subject to conference organizer approval (eg., within scope and appropriately scientific or philosophical). Feel free to list your open space events here in advance. All attendees will also have an opportunity to list open space events on the EDU Program Board each day of the conference.
